REAL DAUGHTERS … let’s Honor them!

Our Heritage is something we are all proud of.  If we weren’t proud, I don’t think you would even be reading this right now!

“As early as 1934, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas recognized the need to honor its members who were Real Daughters.  The delegates to the DRT Convention in Austin that year approved the idea and decided to name it The Centennial Project.  It would take 73 years to bring this recognition of Real Daughters to reality and appear in a printed publication.” (Excerpt Real Daughters, First Edition 2007)

Now, let’s take this one step further, how about marking the grave sites of our Ancestors.  There are approximately 148 Real Daughters that we know of today, only a few of their graves have been marked.  In this 80th year celebration of the Children of the Republic of Texas, let’s all work a little harder at selling Raffle Chances and raise enough money to mark them all.  I know this is a big task to undertake, but I know we can do this.  You could also ask members of your local community to make donations as well; they don’t just have to buy raffle chances.  You could do a fundraiser with your chapter, something.  Every penny will help! (Here’s some friendly competition for your chapter!  Chapters with 1-10 members selling the most raffle chances (minimum $300) will receive $100.  Chapters with 11+ members selling the most raffle chances (minimum $500) will receive $100. (Peters Colony Chapter CRT is exempt from competition!)

The Raffle Chances will be for a Waterford Texas Shaped Paper Weight and a $400 VISA Card

Checks should be made payable to:

3rd Vice President

General’s Project

This year the 3rd VP’s project is to interview an adult (60 years-up – the older the better) find out about what it was like when they were a child.  Learn the history of their life.  This is a great way to learn things you never knew about your grandparents, even great-grandparents or old friends. Have fun & get them to tell you a story about something that happened when they were young. Remember history is learning about the past and that includes your family history.

Some questions you might ask would be:

*       Where did you live?

*       What type of work did your dad do?

*       Did your mom work?

*       Did you buy your food at the grocery or grow it in the garden?

*       Did you have electricity? If not what type of light did you have?

*       Did you have a phone? If not how old were you when you got a phone?

*       Did you have a television?

*       Did you have indoor plumbing? If not how did you get water & take baths?

*       Did you have a car? What type?

*       Did you have a computer? A microwave? What did you cook on?

*       Did you eat out?

*       What did you do for fun?

*       Where did you go to school?

*       Tell me what you did during the summer.

*       What was the most memorable thing that happened to you growing up?

For 10 & up write your questions and the answers you get, you might want to tape the conversation & write your answers down after the interview.

For children under 10 – Ask questions just like the older group, younger children can get someone to help them ask questions. While you are doing this have a picture taken of you & the adult you interviewed.

You may mail or email me your interview or pictures by June 1, 2009.

CRT Recording Secretary General

Recording Secretary General is responsible for recording, writing, and distributing minutes of all BOM meetings and also recording Annual Convention proceedings. This is really important because without a historical record, how can you prove what happened at or who attended an event? My project is based on the recorded notes of the Convention of 1836 at Washington-on-the-Brazos.

Texas History Star:

10 and above. Please answer the following questions.

a)     How many delegates signed the original declaration?

b)    How long did it take to write the declaration? From what date to what date?

c)     Who was the convention president?

d)    Who was named commander-in-chief of the republic's military forces?

e)     How did the convention end?

f)     How was the weather on March 1, 1836? What day of the week was March 1, 1836? What else was happening in Texas on March 1, 1836?

Send me your answers in an email to Alamo_heroes@yahoo.com by June 10, 2009.

Once I get your answers, I will confirm receipt by sending you my answer key.

That way you can find out how well you did. J

9 and below:

Create your own signature block. This is what you use when you sign off on your letters or when you turn in your reports, and it looks something like this (this one is mine):

Marilyn Buchanan, age 17

BOM CRT Recording Secretary General

Alamo Heroes CRT

So your own signature block should have:

 Your name, your age

Your CRT chapter name

And something else special about you … like ice cream eating champion or daddy’s princess or lord, ruler, and commander of the television remote control. (If you are a chapter officer, then please include that info on another line, too!)

Get your mom or CRT sponsor to send the block(s)  by June 10, 2009. Thanks!

  Creative Fun-Star Spangle Banner

Put some frill & glitter on your chapter certificate. As a group, have your chapter write your own declaration of independence. You choose the tyranny (made-up…like freedom from homework for life) you are refusing to accept. Your declaration should have

a)     An opening statement

b)    At least 2 articles of resolution

c)     Ending statement

d)    Signers.

Inserting Fun Option:  All signers should change their names according to this table.

Chaplain General’s Project
2008-2009

Chaplain General’s Project

The Chaplain General's job is to open and close all meetings of the BOM

with a prayer, arrange for and preside at the memorial service at Convention, keep a record of the deaths of all members and write to the bereaved families, and maintain a Book of Memory by preserving articles concerning the deceased members.

RED STAR – Church and missionaries were a part of our ancestors’ lives. Create a “Flat Davy Crockett” or “Flat Padre” and take to historic churches or missionaries. (This activity is similar to “Flat Stanley” with a Texas twist.) Supply photo/s to me of your “Flat Davy or Padre” trip. (A visit to the “Fall at the Alamo” will be a great idea.) This project can be done as a family or chapter, and is especially good for CRT members 10 and under.

(www.flatstanley.com/template.htm) may be used as resource.

GREEN STAR – Prayer is important in our lives. It was also a part of our ancestors’ lives. Research a prayer said by a famous Texan of any time period. Write a short paragraph stating who said the prayer, when it was said, and what were the circumstances surrounding the prayer. Send to me via email or mail.

BLUE STAR – Faith, fellowship and service were important to our ancestors, and still are a valuable part of our lives. Host an event or service project with a neighboring CRT chapter or your sponsoring DRT chapter. This project promotes fellowship and service to others. Send in photos with a description of your event or project. Supply name of CRT sponsors along with email addresses.

GOLD STAR – Perform the blue star along with either a red or green star activity.

All projects should be turned in by June 1, 2008.

GOD BLESS TEXAS

TREA$URER GENERAL’S PROJECT

        $$$$$

Pioneers who came to Texas during the Republic or before brought with them the supplies, tools, equipment and household goods they needed.  Think about ways the pioneers could earn money in their new homeland to buy the things they could not make or grow for themselves.

 1.     Name three ways to earn money in early Texas

 2.     Illustrate one or more of those ways by drawing a picture, taking a photograph of a re-enactment, or clip an example from magazine.

  3.     Projects are due by June 1, 2009.  Be sure to include your name, age, Chapter name, and District number.

 HUNTER CREASEY

TREASURER GENERAL

 REGISTRAR GENERAL’S PROJECT

TOMORROW……. Where will our organization be?  Will we have those ready to carry on?  We need to encourage membership.  My project for 2008 – 2009 is to provide for the future of CRT……

CRT members are being encouraged to recruit new members and prepare supplements.  Most of you have family and friends who are eligible for membership.  And most of you have additional ancestors who you need to prepare supplement papers for.   My project is for all age groups.

PART 1:  Get new members for your chapter or other chapters.  Help family and friends complete paperwork for membership.  Your DRT sponsoring chapter Registrar will be able to assist you with the paperwork.  I will award a certificate to each member who sponsors a new member.  The CRT member who brings in the most new members will receive a special recognition.

Please send me a list of the new members you get signed up. This will be verified with the help of the CRT Registrar General.

PART 2:   As a CRT member you should be honoring each of your ancestors who were here in the Republic of Texas.  We do this by doing supplement applications for these ancestors.  My challenge to you is to complete supplements for all your eligible ancestors.  All members who prepare supplements will be awarded a certificate.  The CRT member who prepares the most supplements will receive a special recognition

Please send your name and the names of the supplements that you do.  This will be also be verified with the help of the CRT Registrar General.

Because of the need for processing of application and supplements, my deadline for submitting to the will need to be May 1, 2009.

Thank you for choosing my projects.

Historian General’s

Project

The Historian General has the responsibility of maintaining the history of the Association by compiling a scrapbook to be displayed at the State Convention, in order to do this, I need your help, here’s how:  Choose 1 or 3 of the awards to achieve and have fun doing it!

Red Star Award

80 Years of History To Celebrate - We have a lot of ground to cover!

Seeing that this is a very special year for CRT we are going to do something a little different.  We are wanting to Celebrate 80 years of CRT, this can be accomplished by each chapter writing a brief history of their Chapter Chartering.  If you have photos that would be great if you could submit copies of them as well.

Each Chapter participating in this part of the project will receive a Special Certificate at the 2009 CRT State Convention.

Green Star Award

Chapter and Individual participation in State Scrapbook will receive Recognition Certificates.  It would be great if you could send completed 12x12 pages, if you are unable to do this, please make sure you label your photographs.  Newspaper articles are great as well.  (Sending your pages as soon as you get them complete would be a great help—this is a big project) Electronic Submissions are ok as well.

Blue Award

Each Chapter will receive a Certificate of Participation for submission of your annual Chapter Scrapbook.  Please pay attention to the Scrapbook Judging Score Card as things have changed.

Please be sure to include you Chapter Name, Chapter President and Age, the Chapter Historian name and age, the CRT Sponsor name and the dates covered in the scrapbook.  REMINDER:  The project must reflect the age of the Chapter Historian.

Scrapbooks will be judged in Three Categories:

Chapter Historian 13 and UP—First, Second and Third Place and Honorable Mention

Chapter Historian 12 and Under—First, Second and Third Place and Honorable Mention

Electronic Submission—First, Second and Third Place and Honorable Mention (PowerPoint presentation only—Computer must be made accessible for the judging committee to view.  The Judging Committee, WILL NOT be responsible for providing a computer)

Gold Award

Each Chapter or Individual participating in all three parts of this project will receive VERY SPECIAL RECOGNITION!

Let’s be proud of our History and Show it … let’s get busy!
